Sitecore Blog: Getting to Know Sitecore

Limitations of Cloning

Dolly the cloned sheep

When cloning was added to Sitecore 6.3, it was greeted as a very welcomed addition to Sitecore's functionality. Cloning allows you to create items that reference other items. This allows the clone to inherit values from the item the clone is based on, but also allows the clone to override those values.

The main limitation of cloning is that the current implementation does not extend into the physical world. The feature request has been submitted, but for technical reasons, it is unlikely to be added to the product any time soon :-)

Which means that certain tasks we perform in our everyday lives will continue as they always have for the foreseeable future. One such task is that of finding good people you want to work with. And that is the real purpose of this blog post: to let you know about a job that someone reading a technical blog about Sitecore might be interested in.

Sitecore's Product Marketing team is hiring a technical architect. Please don't be distracted by the word "marketing". The main responsibility for this job is to make sure that people understand, on a technical level, what Sitecore does and how it works.

For a developer, I think the following are some of the more enticing aspects of the position:

  • You will be among the first people to learn about and use new features and products, such as Sitecore MVC and Sitecore 7.0.
  • You will have direct access to product management, which means you will be able to get answers to all of the deep, theoretical Sitecore questions you have been harboring.
  • You will help guide the direction of the software. If you have an idea for how to enhance Sitecore, or see a technology that Sitecore should incorporate or integrate with, you will be a part of the team that helps make that happen.
  • You will amass such a collection of Sitecore branded clothing that you will be able to go weeks without doing laundry.

I encourage you to check out the job description for more details. And if you have any specific questions about the position or about working at Sitecore, please feel free to contact me directly.

We have been impressed with Sitecore’s extensibility and ease of use. In addition, the time to market for new websites and web pages has decreased dramatically.
