The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills Recognized As 2010 UK Sitecore Site of the Year

New CMS is expected to save the government agency and its partners between £4 and £5 million over the next four years

San Francisco, California December 13, 2010 – Sitecore, the leading provider of .NET Web Content Management System (CMS) software, today announced that The Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS), the government agency responsible for business growth in the UK, has been named the UK Sitecore Site of the Year for 2010. The BIS site, developed by Eduserv using Sitecore's CMS software, has been able to consolidate three entirely separate websites into one, enabling it to better serve its visitors and reduce costs by more than £2.5 million.

Each year, Sitecore’s Site of the Year awards recognizes organizations that leverage Sitecore’s technology to develop an outstanding Web presence and to deliver an enaging online experience. Sitecore’s partners and customers submit nominations on the use of Sitecore’s products to deliver more effective business processes and advance online strategies. Nominations are judged on creativity, integration with rich data sources and applications, the ability to engage, educate and motivate an action, and the overall user experience the site is able to deliver to its visitors.

BIS was created in June 2009 by merging the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) with the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). The new organization has a much broader constituency, and as a result of the merger, faced a number of business challenges including how best to communicate to all audiences via one website. BIS worked with Sitecore partner Eduserv to build a new site that was perfectly placed to deliver on its complex business requirements. The new site empowers BIS’s non-technical staff to easily update new content in real-time, integrates with social networking sites such as Twitter, Flickr and YouTube and also uses Eduserv’s Government Ready Platform (GRR) to host the site, which allows BIS’s partners to develop their own websites within the main framework quickly and efficiently.

“The new website has been really quick to implement and has given us a far more professional online presence,” said Neil Williams, head of digital communications, BIS. “The Sitecore CMS platform will save BIS £2.5 million in relation to our previous CMS implementation. In addition, by converging partner sites onto the shared platform has the potential to save another £700k a year in hosting and maintenance costs across the BIS family.”

“We are glad to see large government organizations such as BIS, which plays a very big part in the UK’s economic growth, using Sitecore for such a central task,” said Laust Sondergaard, chairman, Sitecore UK. “This execution of a large scale Web platform is future proofing the electronic communication for a large variety of governmental bodies.  In times when budgets are stretched, it is important for businesses to invest smart and achieve high. Investing smartly on technology not only can bring significant benefits, but also enables organizations to proactively change the way they do business to adapt to increasing market demands. Our customers have realized this and it is quite evident from all the outstanding projects we have selected to honor this year.”
