““Gathering and consolidating knowledge and information from hospitals throughout the country has never been easier. Now, we are able to consolidate information, without having to invest huge amount of resources in the process””
Summary
The National Board of Health works within the field of health prevention and promotion and communicates information about health and health-care to the public. In addition to these tasks, The National Board of Health also handles information about patients' rights and treatment and attends to the collection and analysis of health related data.
Challenge
With more than 200 public and private hospitals throughout Denmark all reporting critical data to the National Board of Health, there were vast amount of resources spent on keeping internal and external systems up-to-date.
Once the data was received from the external sources, it had to be entered into the Document Management System, where it entered a complex process to provide consolidated information for the Health Industry in Denmark.
Solution
It was soon decided to use XML as the data interface to and from the National Board of Health. Utilizing Sitecore’s XML layer also opened the possibility to create a full transparent integration to the Document Management System, allowing external sources to provide XML-based data, which is then stored directly into the internal systems.
The data is consolidated, providing valuable, up-to-date statistics and information for healthcare workers throughout the country.
Since all data is consolidated into one, centrally placed, database, further statistics and data-mining is a simple task.
Result
The manual processes of gathering and consolidating data has been replaced by automatic processes, allowing external knowledge workers to input and retrieve information throughout the days – whenever needed and convenient.
The system ensures mission critical up-to-date information, which eventually may end up saving lives. Furthermore, valuable knowledge is easily shared between doctors and professors without time-consuming procedures.
Last, but not least, the National Board of Health constantly expands the amount of statistical data, ensuring even more valuable information in the future.
Technical Description
Sitecore’s open API and native XML support, easily allows input of data from various sources. This being manually typed information, entered into the user friendly interface of Sitecore directly, or automated updates based on events from external systems.
As storage, beneath Sitecore’s XML interface, the National Board of Health chose Microsoft’s SQL Server to ensure durability and performance.
The consolidated information is then presented in a normal web-browser, easily accessible without any geographical restrictions, using XSL transformations of the XML content.
The separated layers of data and presentation even allow the information to be published directly on mobile devices as well.
