Site of the Year Australia/New Zealand -- Best Electronics Site: Canon Australia
Implementation Partner: UberConsult Solutions
Canon Australia is a leading provider of advanced, simple-to-use imaging solutions for businesses and consumers. Canon’s Australian R&D company, CiSRA, develops customised solutions for local customers, and exports digital imaging technologies for use in Canon products worldwide. Canon Australia also operates Canon Finance Australia, which offers one-stop shopping for customers wanting leasing or finance services. Canon Oceania is committed to its guiding philosophy of kyosei – living and working together for the common good – having committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 1.5% pa until 2020.
Canon’s goals for their new site included:
- Create a more personalised experience: They wanted to allow the customers to navigate the site in a variety of ways based on whether they knew what they wanted or were looking for assistance in finding the right product, service or solution for them based on their needs.
- Simple and easy to use: They wanted a solution that would allow content editors to be up and running quickly – without having to be technical experts. At the same time, they wanted site content to make it easy for site visitors to quickly find products, support and information.
- Deliver a compelling brand experience: With a brand as well-known as Canon, this was extremely important.
- Encourage participation and return usage: Canon wanted their site to become the basis for a strong, vibrant online community.
Working with UberConsult Solutions, a Sitecore partner, Canon Australia and New Zealand chose Sitecore based on the following reasons: The features matched Canon’s business needs; Sitecore has a flexible and extensible architecture; Sitecore’s ability to deploy highly scalable sites; and finally, Sitecore’s other products and extensibility would allow them to support other online, intranet and extranet projects as needed.
UberConsult Solutions extended the internal search to provide for custom results and integration to complex product hierarchies. They also updated Multimedia components for greater Flash flexibility, created dynamic product carousels, and automated resizing of content -- including multi-browser transparency of resized image libraries.
The new site allows customers to find product, support and company information more quickly. Since launch, Canon’s customer registrations have increased and continue to trend strongly as they introduce new features.
According to Michael Vinter, Canon Australia, “The site exceeds all initial goals - it is a clean, simple to use and has an elegant design. Customers have been able to get to information more quickly. The site forms the foundation for future initiatives which are already being planned and provides a strong, online experience of the Canon Brand.”
Site of the Year Australia/New Zealand -- Best E-Commerce Site: Clive Peeters Group
Implementation Partner: White Labelled
Clive Peeters.com.au was launched towards the end of last year as the leading retailer’s first full online shop, allowing customers to shop online for all their electrical appliances needs, 24 hours a day.
Outsourced agency White Labelled was tasked with the build of the site, with the objective to create Australia’s best online multi-channel retail experience driving revenue and profit for Clive Peeters Group. One of the main goals was to be consistent with the ‘easy’ tagline of Clive Peeters – ensuring the site was convenient, knowledgeable and easy to use by replicating the offline experience that customers are exposed to in- store as well as differentiate itself from current competitors.
White Labelled partnered with Sitecore, the leading provider of .NET Web Content Management System (CMS) software, to implement creative features such as:
- Integration with the Clive Peeters ERP system to provide near real time stock inventory, pricing and availability
- Complex delivery matrix that takes into consideration stock inventory, location, requested delivery day, delivery location and cost for efficiency for delivery
- Virtual and physical gift cards redeemable online and in store
According to Paul Wilson, Managing Director at White Labelled, “We were very pleased that Sitecore awarded our work for Clive Peeters with ’site of the year’. The site is exceeding our goals, and it’s only 9 months into the first year! We’ve implemented a robust and extensible platform into the business that provides flexibility for enhancement and customisation, and we’re now moving towards enhancing the site and experience for customers. We love Sitecore’s Online Marketing Suite and are excited by its capabilities, and we look forward to pushing it and improving the site this coming year.”
Since its launch, the site has generated almost 5 times more traffic than before, with store basket values exceeding expectations. Internet retailing and Digital Marketing Lab both ran the “Australian Brands to applaud in the digital space” blog, naming Clive Peeters as the industry leader for electrical retailing.
Paul said “This has only been possible through a strong partnership with Clive Peeters founded on closely aligned visions for the site. From day 1 they were clear that this needed to be a truly integrated multi-channel experience with the challenges this brings to the site and the business invisible to their customer. This vision has led to a clean, simple customer experience that we believe is unique in Australia to its industry.”
Site of the Year Australia/New Zealand -- Best Government Site: Invercargill City Council
Implementation Partner: Datacom Systems Ltd.
Invercargill (pop. 51,000) is the southern most city in New Zealand. The Invercargill City Council, which is chosen in elections held every three years, is charged with providing and maintaining services and amenities for Invercargill and the nearby port town of Bluff, home of the scrumptious Bluff oysters. The people of Invercargill and the surrounding province of Southland are recognised far and wide for their warm and welcoming nature - but be aware that they punch well above their weight in many areas and are the current holders of New Zealand's premier rugby trophy!
The Council website aims to expand the range and usability of timely, quality information. Quality does not mean dull and slideshows and galleries will, increasingly, underline that there is much to be proud of in the city - and in the work of the Council. The site targets three main audiences:
Residents: To highlight services offered by the Council and to expand the number of services available online.
Visitors: To highlight the attractions of the city and the southern lifestyle.
Business community: To provide access to public documents such as bylaws and long-term plans, to planning and other maps, and to online tools such as the regularly updated property/rates search system.
Requirements were discussed with Sitecore partner Datacom Systems Ltd and its proposal to extend the Sitecore CMS with specifically-designed templates was accepted. The attractive look and feel was provided by Invercargill company Print Central.
Viewers have been impressed by the clean and snappy functionality. The development of the online cemetery database has proved to be a winner with viewers and genealogists at home and abroad. More than 54,000 records are now searchable and headstone photos, inscriptions and printable plot maps accompany search results for the main cemetery. Also popular is the Splash Palace public swimming pool site-within-a site which maintains the navigation and functionality of the "main" site but with a completely different look. Working quietly behind the scene are pages where "timed content" automatically displays or removes itself according to choices made by content editors. This functionality works well for lists of shows and events, meeting details and Council job advertisements.
John Leask, the Invercargill City Council website administrator, says: “Our new site has generated much interest and support externally and among Council staff. We are pleased with the flexibility that enables non-technical staff -- content editors -- to change navigation, to tweak headers and footers and to reconfigure many other items. The slideshows and galleries, and the change of pace and style in the swimming complex mini-site, are features that continue to attract praise. We have decided to go with Sitecore and Datacom for the intranet we plan to launch later this year."
