Today marks the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's inauguration as the 35th president of the United States. And it’s the perfect day to announce a very special website and digital archives project that Sitecore is proud to be associated with alongside Velir, AT&T, EMC, Iron Mountain, Raytheon and other contributors.
A half-century ago, President John F. Kennedy shared his memorable call to action on a frigid Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 1961: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." This was undoubtedly one of most important moments in the 20th century when the the world needed hope, leadership and vision. Are we at a similar moment in time, now?
Also in 1961, President Kennedy was asked at a press conference (video) whether he would consider putting his official papers in a library in Washington D.C., rather than in his home town as previous presidents have done, so as to make them more accessible to scholars and historians who come to Washington to work at the Library of Congress and other agencies. In his response, JFK touched on a future where, "through scientific means of reproduction … and this will certainly be increased as time goes on, we will find it possible to reproduce the key documents so that they will be commonly available."
He was right and it's worth noting that one of the world’s leading reproduction technologies, if you will, is honoring JFK today:
Since the JFKLibary.org website and digital archives were officially launched last Thursday during Caroline Kennedy’s press conference, there has been much discussion about the purpose and value of the new website and digital archives to inform and inspire people regardless of their age, education, location or political preferences.
According to Ms. Kennedy: "In our increasingly fragmented society, young people are often disconnected and disillusioned with politics. President Kennedy's example -- his words, his spirit -- are more relevant than ever," she said, "Using today's technology, we will be able to give today's generation access to the historical record and challenge them to answer my father's call to service, to solve the problems of our own time."
Take a moment to enjoy and share this JFK50 multimedia experience! It will move you -- maybe for a good cause.
